How to dress in your 40s – casual summer outfit ideas for mature women
1. White jeans and a chambray shirt
The first outfit that you can wear is a combination of white jeans and a chambray shirt.
Don’t tell me that you can’t wear white because someone told you that it’s not appropriate for your age. If it is, forget it. You can wear whatever you like on your body.
It’s a great look for women because it looks so chic and modern.
It’s also great because you can use it to create smart casual outfits over 50.
Chambray tops are great for mature women because they help you to look younger. And they look perfect with white jeans.
So, you can definitely try it, if you haven’t already.
You can create outfits with items I found for you. I tried my best to find them at an affordable price. But some of them are pricey too. So, you can check them out and decide whether or not they are worth investing in.

2. Midi dress and jacket
The next thing that you can wear is a midi dress. They are very trending right now. Young people also wear them a lot.
The midi length is perfect for your age.

I have to mention age a few times today. Not because it’s important for styling, but because it’s what this article is all about.
The midi length is great because it has enough coverage but it still looks sexy and elegant.
If you want to dress up the look, you can replace the regular midi dress with a silk or satin dress. They look more elegant and work-appropriate. So, you can wear the outfit at the office as well.
You should always use accessories for outfits. For this particular look, you can use a handbag, bracelet, earrings, or a luxury-looking watch.

You can wear a jacket over the dress for cooler weather.
It can be a blazer or a leather or a denim jacket. They are pretty useful in summer too, If it’s not too hot summer in your country.

3. Mom jeans shorts
You can definitely wear shorts if you think they look flattering on you.
But mom shorts are the type of shorts that look the best on mature women. It’s not either too sexy or too boring.
In mom jeans shorts I mean, long rise jean shorts that are fitted on the waist and are baggier on the hips. That’s what I call mom shorts.
You can wear any top with them. But try to choose the one that will pair with shorts well. Check out some tops I found for the outfit.
If you choose a solid color top and shorts you can wear a long chiffon kimono over the top. It will be great for layering and also will look chicier.
4. Black dress + fedora hat + handbag
For the next outfit, you are gonna need a casual black dress and some accessories.
Why casual and why black?
Well, because it’s the most practical color for clothes. It’s easy to style, it’s easy to pair with everything and it looks chic and modern.
I want you to go for a casual dress because it’s comfier. Feeling comfortable is the most important thing in styling. If you don’t feel comfy, you probably won’t look great.
For this outfit I want you to wear a fedora hat and casual handbag to accessorize the outfit. Fedora is another awesome accessory that makes outfits look more modern and chic. So, you should use it more often.
5. Use yellow in the outfit
This one is definitely now the outfit idea. It’s more like a tip that I want you to remember and use.
It doesn’t matter what age you are and even when you are over a certain age you have to always try to look younger. That’s why I decided to share the tip.
Try to use the yellow piece in the outfit because it’s a bright color, it’s a fun color and it makes you look ten years younger.
It can be top pants, shoes, accessories, or anything you are using in the outfit. Just try to use the one in the whole look.

For the next chic, modern look you have to wear a long white dress with a longline cardigan.
Wearing long clothes is a good option for you. Because it makes you look taller and slimmer.
But also, the combination of a long dress and a long cardigan looks just awesome.

7. Shirt dress + wedges
Dresses are really essential for summer. I mean for everyone. They are easy to style. They are comfy to wear on hot days and so on and so forth.

For this outfit I want you to wear a shirt dress with wedges. Shirt dresses are cooler and they also make you look younger.
You can wear a fedora hat with this outfit as well. It will look great.
The handbag will be another accessory that will look perfect with the outfit.
8. White shirt + white pants

This time, I want you to go all the white.
White is the color that can create an awesome, elegant outfit. All white outfit looks as chic as all-black. But white is more expensive (and elegant) looking.
And so if you style it the right way, you are gonna look like a queen.
What I mean by styling the right way is to use accessories that make the look more interesting.
For example, a brown belt or handbag will do great for the outfit.
Another thing that will help you to complete the outfit is mules. Mules are great for summer.
They are comfy and they look age-appropriate for mature women. Although there are mules that look so modern that young girls also wear them all the time.
I am not saying that you are old but I am saying that mules are the perfect pair of shoes for you.

9. Polka dot dress + white shoes + brown handbag
Polka dots are coming from very far history. They last so long because they look so cute. The print is so popular this year as well.
And for the next outfit, I want you to wear a white polka-dotted dress with white shoes and a brown handbag.
I don’t want to talk much about this outfit. Because it’s not needed.
You are gonna find out everything when you will wear it.
10. White pants + pink shirt + mules + bag
The next outfit you can create with white pants and pink shirts. White is great to be paired with pink, blue, and brown.
So, you can also wear a blue skirt instead of a pink shirt and also you can wear a white shirt instead of white pants.
The main idea is to play with pink (or blue) and white colors. You are gonna need white mules for this outfit. Because one more different color won’t look good. And also you are gonna need a pink bag to use as an accessory.
If you don’t enjoy wearing pants, you can change them into a skirt. Just keep the colors!
This outfit will be perfect! Chic and modern! And I think it’s gonna be comfy as well.
11. Pleated skirt + shirt
Pleated skirts are huge this year. Everyone wears them, It’s because they look also very cute and stylish.
So, why you should miss wearing it? – you don’t have to.
You can pair it with any color shirt. But if you wonder blue is the best option for this specific outfit.
I mean if you go for neutrals, it’s OK too.
But if you want to make an interesting, unique outfit, it’s a better idea to go for a blue shirt.
Some pleated skirts are so expensive looking that you can wear them to some parties. For example at weddings. You just need to pair it with a more elegant top that will make you look stunning.

12. Black mom jeans + leopard print top

But for this next outfit idea, you can wear black mom jeans with a leopard print top.
Leopard print is another trending thing this year. In fact, it’s trending for a pretty long.
And the thing that you are over 40, doesn’t mean that you can’t wear it. Clothes with leopard print look chic and modern. So, not only you but everyone can wear it.
You can use something to layer the outfit. Only if you have cooler days in summer (o other seasons) of course. You can wear a denim jacket or a cardigan.
Layering outfits looks always fashionable. You just have to do it right.

13. Wide-leg pants + printed top
Today we have an unlimited amount of trending pieces in the outfits, lol. That’s great, right?
Yeah, and the next one is wide-leg pants, which have become more popular since 2021.
I have to say, I’ll never wear them. In spite of the thing that they are so trending. Because I don’t like how they look on my body.
Maybe because I am a pear shape and I am not tall enough as well.
So, I don’t know the actual reason but I know that I don’t like them on my body.
Although, I love how they look at others. It gives a flattering look to the outfit. So, if you love wearing it the next outfit idea is for you.
You can wear wide-leg pants with a chiffon-printed top. In the best case, it’s better if the top is tight or at least fits on your higher body. Because two different loose pieces don’t look good together.
Since you are gonna wear a printed top, it’s also better if you choose a solid color for the pants. It can be neutrals as well. It’s your choice.

14. Linen pants + cotton shirt + accessories + white sneakers
Linen is the best fabric to wear in summer. Don’t you agree?
It’s a comfy, breathable material that will make hot summer days cool. You can wear linen pants with a cotton shirt for more comfiness. They both are breathable and useful fabrics for summer.
So, the outfit will be simple but comfy, chic, and stylish. But for this specific outfit, I want you to wear white sneakers with it.
It’s gonna be a chilly summer outfit.
Add some accessories like sunglasses or a handbag to the look and you will be ready to go.
15. White shorts + shirt
And it’s time to share the last summer outfit for today. I think it’s too simple but I still wanted to share it.
It’s an outfit with white shorts and a shirt. You can choose any color for the shirt. Since we have one item in a neutral color, you can go for anything busy.
It will still look great.
The only thing I want to add here is a belt. Use a belt on shorts, to define and make your waist look more beautiful.
It doesn’t matter if you carry much weight in your middle section. But if you do, you can use a belt a bit higher than your neutral waistline.
It will accentuate the narrowest part of your body. So, it will look more feminine and flattering. You can definitely pair other accessories to the outfit. But it’s up to you.
