Christmas outfits for ladies over 50 can be as relaxed or as dressed up as your plans. You might want a soft sweater for Christmas morning at home, or you might finally have somewhere to wear that skirt sitting in your closet.
I’ve gathered comfortable Christmas Day looks, dinner outfits, and dressier ideas with pants, skirts, and festive separates to help you find something that feels like you.
Before you buy anything, take a look at what you already own.
What Should You Wear for Christmas Over 50?
What does Christmas usually look like for you?
I mostly spend it at home with my family, so I would happily wear a soft sweater and comfortable pants. Add some pretty earrings, and that’s enough for me to feel dressed for the day.
Your Christmas dinner outfit might be a little dressier. Before you buy something, try those black pants in your closet with a blouse you haven’t worn in a while. You may love them together.
Just sit down in the pants first, especially if the waistband feels snug when you’re standing.
And if you have a Christmas party planned, this could be your chance to wear a satin skirt or a velvet dress. You don’t have to stick with pants because they feel like the safer choice.
The same goes for color.
Wear red if you love it, but don’t put aside a beautiful cream or black outfit just because it’s Christmas. A pair of sparkly earrings can give it all the holiday detail you want.
Casual Christmas Outfits for Women Over 50
If you’re spending Christmas at home or visiting family, you probably want something you can settle into for a few hours.
I would start with the pants you already enjoy wearing. There’s no reason to spend Christmas dinner in a pair that digs into your waist when a comfortable pair could look just as lovely with a different top.
A sweater you love might be all you need with them. But if the outfit feels a little too everyday, try changing one detail before changing your clothes. A pair of earrings that shows up with your hair down can make more difference than a necklace hidden under a scarf.
The casual Christmas outfits below will give you a few combinations to try. Use the pieces you have, even if the colors aren’t an exact match.
A Christmas Sweatshirt + Festive Leggings

I would happily keep the slippers with this one. If you’re opening presents and spending Christmas morning at home, there’s no reason to put on boots before you’ve even had your coffee.
And while we’re talking about Christmas presents, if you haven’t decided what you’d like this year, my Christmas wishlist ideas might help you think of a few things.
The red printed leggings make this outfit so playful. I like that the red in the graphic picks up the color of the leggings. You have two different prints, but they still feel connected.
If you want to recreate this Christmas leggings outfit, pay attention to the bottom of your sweatshirt.
A tight ribbed hem can catch around your hips and make the fabric bunch above it. Try one that falls loosely instead, especially if you prefer a little room around your tummy. You can also go slightly longer if you want more coverage over your bottom without buying a much bigger size.
Push the sleeves up a little, as she has here, so your hands don’t disappear inside the sweatshirt. That small adjustment helps a roomy top look less bulky.
And if the printed leggings feel like too much for you, wear your plain black ones. You’ll still have the Christmas detail on top, with an outfit you can comfortably wear for a whole morning with family.
Gray Sweater + Faux Leather Leggings

This is the kind of outfit I would try if you love wearing sweaters but want something a little dressier for Christmas. The faux leather adds a slight shine, and the little evening bag makes the gray knit feel ready for dinner.
What I like here is the room through the sweater without everything looking oversized. You have a softer shape on top and a closer fit through the legs. If you prefer some coverage around your tummy, this gives you that without needing a long, heavy layer.
Notice the sweater’s hem, too. It dips at the front and rises at the sides, so you can still see some of the leg line.
If your own sweater hangs much lower and makes you feel shorter, try a slightly shorter one before deciding the leggings don’t work for you. You don’t have to tuck a thick knit into a fitted waistband. I have a lot more examples of this in my guide to flattering tops that skim instead of cling, especially if sweater length around your tummy is something you struggle with.
The folded neckline is lovely, but you might prefer a less bulky neck if you have a fuller bust or feel crowded by fabric near your face. A soft V-neck sweater would work with these pants as well.
I also love the black shoes with the black leggings. They help carry the color down to your feet, and you can get a similar effect with black flats or ankle boots. Wear the heels if you enjoy them, but this faux leather leggings outfit doesn’t depend on heel height to look good.
For Christmas, I would keep the gray if it’s a color you love. The earrings and evening bag already give you something special.
A Long White Shirt + Jeans + Plaid Scarf

Take your white shirt and jeans, then throw a plaid scarf over your shoulders. I love how much the scarf adds here. You could wear this for a casual Christmas lunch without buying a whole outfit for one day.
Leave the scarf open at the front so you can see the shirt underneath. Wrapping a big scarf around your neck adds quite a bit of fabric near your face and bust. If you love the print but find the scarf too heavy, try a thinner one and wear it the same way.
The long shirt gives you coverage through your tummy and hips, while the fitted jeans keep some shape in the outfit. But don’t reach for your longest shirt automatically. If you’re petite, a shirt that nearly touches your knees might leave very little of your jeans showing above the boots. Try a hip-length version and see which you prefer on you.
I would keep the brown boots. They look lovely with the blue and white, and a low-heeled pair would work just as well. Tuck your jeans smoothly into them so you don’t have folds of denim pressing against your legs.
For a more festive plaid scarf outfit, use a red scarf with the same white shirt. Or keep the blue and white if that feels more like you.
A Camel Cardigan + White Blouse + Black Jeans

The gold jewelry caught my eye here. That necklace sits so nicely inside the V-neck, and the bracelet shows above the turned-back sleeve. Those little details give you something to dress up a cardigan you might already wear every week.
For a casual Christmas lunch, I would happily copy this combination. The camel cardigan has enough weight to hold its shape, while the white blouse falls softly underneath. If you want coverage around your arms and hips but don’t enjoy wearing a fitted jacket, try this.
Pay attention to how the two layers sit together. Here, the cardigan hangs below the blouse, so the white hem doesn’t peek out awkwardly beneath it.
You can leave the blouse untucked and still get a flattering shape. Pick one that skims your middle rather than flaring out under the cardigan. The V-neck gives you some space around your chest, which you might appreciate if a high neckline makes you feel too covered.
I would also keep the pants close to the ankle length you see here. Extra denim piling up over the shoes would make this long cardigan outfit look heavier at the bottom. If skinny jeans feel restrictive around your calves, try slim straight-leg pants with the same top.
The pointed shoes look lovely, but you could easily wear a lower heel or a pointed flat. Keep the gold jewelry, and the cardigan you already wear every week suddenly feels much more dressed up.
Christmas Dinner Outfits for Women Over 50
Christmas dinner gives you a reason to pull out something you don’t wear every day. Maybe you have a lovely skirt waiting for an occasion, or a blouse you always forget about when you reach for your sweaters.
I would start there. You can dress up a favorite piece without buying everything to go with it. The outfits below will help you work out the pairings, whether your family dresses up for dinner at home or you’ve booked a table somewhere special.
And if you are specifically dressing for Christmas Eve, you can also see my Christmas Eve dinner outfits for more ideas.
A Black Sweater Over a White Shirt + Gray Pants

You don’t need to replace your black sweater with a Christmas print to dress for dinner. I like how she uses the white collar and shirttail to break up the dark knit, then adds earrings and red lipstick. It feels like something you could put together from your own closet.
The gray pants and black flats keep this outfit comfortable for a family gathering while still looking dressed up. If you prefer a little coverage over your tummy, the untucked shirt gives you that without needing a much longer sweater.
Getting the two layers right makes the biggest difference here. Start with a lightweight shirt that fits comfortably across your bust, then pull the sweater over it. You want enough room in the knit for the shirt to lie smoothly. If you see ridges around your waist or feel tightness through your upper arms, try a roomier sweater rather than spending the day pulling at both layers.
And if getting tops and pants to fit comfortably at the same time is a regular problem for you, I go into that much more in my guide to dressing over 50 when you carry extra weight.
I would keep the pants fairly slim or straight with these layers so you can still see some leg shape below the shirt. Let them finish cleanly above your flats or loafers instead of gathering over the shoe. Add earrings, and you have a Christmas dinner outfit you can comfortably stay in long after the meal is over.
Red Textured Sweater + Flowing Red Skirt
I love that she went all the way with red here, right down to the shoes. The gold bag stands out beautifully against it, and the different fabrics give you plenty to look at without adding a print.
If you usually wear your red sweater with black pants, try it with a red skirt for Christmas dinner. Put the pieces next to each other before worrying about an exact color match. Here, the skirt looks a little deeper than the sweater, but the shades work together.
What makes this sweater and skirt outfit flattering is where the knit ends. She wears a roomy sweater, but it stops around her upper hips and leaves most of the skirt visible. A much longer sweater would cover the part where the skirt starts to open out and could make the whole outfit feel heavier.
You can copy that proportion without wearing anything tight around your tummy. Let the sweater sit loosely over the waistband. If you want a little more waist definition, try a small front tuck with a thinner knit.
If you have an hourglass shape and this is the part you usually get stuck on, I have more examples in my hourglass with a tummy guide. You do not have to hide your waist completely just because you want a little more room through the middle.
I would leave a sweater this thick untucked rather than push all that fabric inside the skirt.
The skirt matters just as much. Look for one that drops softly over your hips instead of standing out stiffly underneath the sweater. You’ll have room to move, and the fabric will follow you as you walk. If gathers add more fullness around your middle than you like, try a skirt with a smoother waistband and less gathering.
I would skip the hat for dinner and keep the gold bag or earrings. The red outfit already makes enough of a statement.
The skirt leaves her ankles and red shoes visible, which helps the long hem feel lighter. Try yours on with the shoes you’ll actually wear. If it nearly covers your feet, a slightly shorter hem may give you the look you want without adding a higher heel.
A Red Lace Top + Black Pants + Leopard Heels

The leopard shoes make this outfit more interesting for me.
You already have the red lace and a little sparkle near the face, but the small amount of print at the feet gives you something unexpected. I would try this for Christmas dinner if you enjoy dressing up but feel more comfortable in pants.
The lace sleeves give you arm coverage without the thickness of a sweater. That’s useful when you want to leave your jacket at the door and still feel happy with what you’re wearing. Give yourself enough room through the upper arms, though. Reach forward when you try the top on, because some lace fabrics have very little stretch.
I would leave that scalloped hem untucked so you can see the detail against the black pants. It finishes around the upper hip here, which leaves a long stretch of black below. If you prefer more coverage over your tummy, look for a slightly longer version that falls loosely instead of gripping you around the bottom edge. You can keep the same idea without wearing the exact cut in the photo.
I would happily swap the heels for leopard flats for a long family dinner. You’ll keep the detail that makes the shoes fun without needing the height. And if you already own black shoes you love, use those and let the metallic clutch add the shine.
White Blouse + Silver Sequin Skirt
A silver sequin skirt does most of the work for you here. I like the white blouse with it because you still look dressed up for Christmas dinner without adding sparkle everywhere. The loose sleeves also make a fitted skirt feel a little easier to wear.
This is also the kind of piece I like in a Christmas capsule wardrobe because you can wear the same skirt again with a knit, black top, or different blouse.
If you want the outfit to feel more flattering through the middle, do not pull the blouse completely flat into the waistband. Let a little fabric sit softly over the top of the skirt. That gives you some waist definition without drawing too much attention to the stomach.
The sleeves give you some arm coverage and keep the white blouse from looking too plain with such a dressy skirt.
Keep the shoes and accessories simple because the skirt is already the statement piece. This is an easy dressy Christmas outfit for women over 50 when you want something festive but do not want to wear a dress.
Dressy Christmas Party Outfits for Women Over 50
Christmas parties are the perfect excuse to wear something a little more special than your usual dinner look. You can bring in velvet, sheer sleeves, metallics, sequins, or tailored trousers without making the outfit feel overdone.
The best dressy Christmas party outfits for women over 50 still feel like you, just with a little more polish and festive detail.
If you also want party looks with more specific tips for a curvier figure, I have a separate guide to Christmas party outfits for curvy women.
Sheer-Sleeve Top + Plaid Trousers
Those sleeves are what turn this into a Christmas party outfit for me. With a plain black top, the plaid trousers could easily feel more like something you would wear to work. The sheer fabric and puffed shape make the whole thing feel dressier without needing sequins.
The wide belt gives her a very defined waist, but you do not have to copy that part exactly. If a wide belt cuts across your tummy or feels uncomfortable when you sit, try a narrower one or leave it off. The trousers and statement sleeves are enough to make the outfit work.
If you want to recreate it, pay attention to where the trousers sit. A higher rise works especially well with this type of top because it keeps the middle looking neat and gives the legs more length.
I would keep the rest fairly simple.
Earrings, a small bag, and dressy shoes are enough when the sleeves are already doing this much.
Ruffle-Sleeve Top + Wide-Leg Pants

Red pants already make the outfit feel festive, so the black top does not need to compete with them. I like that it still has interesting sleeves, though. A completely plain black top could make the outfit feel a little flat, while the ruffles give you something extra without adding another color or print.
If you are recreating it, look for trousers that fall smoothly from the waist instead of pulling across the hips or stomach. I would also try a slightly higher rise with this look. It gives the top a cleaner place to end and lets more of the trouser length show.
The statement necklace is a nice finishing touch here, but you could also leave the neckline simple and add earrings instead. With bright red pants and dramatic sleeves already in the outfit, you really do not need much more.
Sequin Top + Black Faux-Leather Pants
You do not need a dress to look dressed up for a Christmas party. A sparkly top with black pants can feel just as festive, and this outfit is a good example of how to make that combination look a little more special.
The soft blush sequin top is the first thing you notice, but I like that the rest of the outfit stays dark and simple. Faux-leather pants give the look more polish than regular black pants, and they also make the lighter top stand out more.
With faux leather, I would be picky about the fit through the waist and hips. If you see pulling or deep creases before you even sit down, try another pair.
The top here stops close to the waistband, which helps show the shape of the pants and keeps the outfit from looking heavy around the middle. If you prefer a little more coverage, you could wear a slightly longer sparkly top, but I would still keep it above the widest part of the hips.
The cropped pants also work nicely with ankle boots. You can see the narrowest part of the ankle instead of having extra fabric bunching over the shoe.
This is a good Christmas party outfit with pants if you want something dressy without wearing red, green, or a full sequin dress.
And if you’re still deciding what to ask for Christmas, you can get some ideas from my Christmas wishlist guide. I’ve included everything from little treats to bigger gifts you might have been wanting for a while.
