What are you wearing for Christmas Eve dinner this year? I think it depends mostly on where you’re spending the evening. A sweater and jeans can work perfectly well for dinner at home, especially with a nice pair of earrings or boots. If you’re going to a restaurant, a satin skirt, velvet dress, or tailored trousers might feel more appropriate.

For these 20 Christmas Eve dinner outfits, I’ve included everything from comfortable knits to sequin dresses.

What Should You Wear to Christmas Eve Dinner?

For dinner at home, a nice sweater with jeans, trousers, or a skirt is usually enough. If your family dresses up for Christmas, a satin skirt or velvet outfit is a lovely choice.

For a restaurant dinner, I’d look at midi dresses, tailored trousers with a dressy top, or a simple dress with a jacket. If the restaurant has a formal dress code, that’s when you can bring out the sequin dresses and evening gowns.

And don’t worry about wearing traditional Christmas colors. Burgundy, dark green, cream, and red are lovely, but black works just as well, especially with velvet, satin, or a little sparkle.

Casual Christmas Eve Dinner Outfits

For a casual Christmas Eve dinner, think about what you’ll actually be doing that evening. If you’re hosting, cooking, or helping around the house, choose something comfortable that you won’t have to keep adjusting.

And if your family likes to dress up for Christmas, there’s nothing wrong with wearing a little sparkle, even for dinner at home.

Christmas Sweater With a Mini Skirt and Boots

The red bow on this sweater is easy to recreate, even if you only have a plain white knit. Try tying a narrow velvet ribbon into a small bow and attaching it with a removable pin. You can take it off after Christmas and keep wearing the sweater.

I’d also borrow the gray and burgundy color combination from this outfit. Burgundy boots look lovely with a gray skirt, and you can wear them again with charcoal trousers or a gray sweater dress later in winter.

Brown Wrap Sweater With a Leather Mini Skirt

One thing to consider with a wide, folded neckline like this is your coat. A narrow coat collar can push the sweater up around your neck and make it bunch. Try them together before leaving home. A coat with a more open neckline or enough room around the shoulders will be easier to wear.

The black leather skirt and tall boots also give you a useful way to wear brown knitwear. That chocolate sweater you usually pair with jeans might look completely different with black leather.

Green Sweater With Leather Shorts

Those fluffy cuffs are lovely, but I’d think twice about wearing this sweater if you’re the one cooking Christmas Eve dinner. Decorative cuffs can get in the way when you’re preparing food, washing your hands, or serving dishes.

For a dinner where you’re the guest, I’d happily leave them as they are. The green sweater has enough detail that you can wear it with very ordinary black bottoms and still have an interesting outfit.

The leather shorts look good with sheer tights, although I’d choose a warmer pair if you’re walking to dinner. You could also swap the shorts for a black leather midi skirt and keep the same sweater. That would be another lovely Christmas dinner outfit.

Burgundy Velvet Top and Matching Shorts

A velvet set is useful because you can wear both pieces together for Christmas and style them separately afterward.

The little ties down the front are the detail I’d pay attention to here. If the openings feel too revealing for a family gathering, try a thin camisole underneath. Choose one close to the burgundy color so it doesn’t interrupt the look.

You could also wear the velvet top with black wide-leg trousers for a restaurant dinner. It would look completely different, and you’d get more use out of the piece.

I’d save the matching shorts for an indoor gathering where you know you’ll be comfortable wearing them.

Faux-Fur Jacket With Dark Wide-Leg Jeans

Before copying this outfit, think about what happens when the jacket comes off.

The faux-fur jacket makes the dark jeans look dressy outdoors, but you’ll probably take it off as soon as you arrive for dinner. A fine-knit top, satin blouse, or cardigan underneath will help the outfit feel finished indoors too.

The charcoal jeans are worth noticing. They’re a little softer than solid black and work beautifully with black leather accessories.

White Cardigan With a Silver Sequin Skirt

A sequin midi skirt can be surprisingly difficult to style if everything you try with it feels too dressy.

The white cardigan here is a useful idea because it has the shape of something you’d wear during the day, but the decorative buttons make it suitable for Christmas dinner.

Pay attention to the cardigan’s fabric. A fine, smooth knit works nicely against sequins because you can see the difference between the two textures. A heavily textured cardigan might catch against the skirt, especially around the waistband.

And don’t feel that you have to wear heels with a skirt like this. Silver flats or cream slingbacks would work beautifully for dinner at home.

Dressy Christmas Eve Dinner Outfits

If you’re having Christmas Eve dinner at a restaurant, check whether it’s the kind of place where people usually dress up. Some restaurants are perfectly fine with a nice sweater and trousers, while others call for a cocktail dress or something more formal. The outfits below would also work for family dinners where everyone likes to get dressed up for Christmas.

Red Midi Dress With Black Accessories

The neckline is the detail I’d pay attention to on this red midi dress. It has a softly shaped front and wide straps that make the dress look more interesting than a basic straight neckline.

That shape also affects which bra you can wear. Check that the straps and cups won’t show before buying a dress with a neckline like this. A well-fitting balconette bra may work, depending on how low the dress sits.

For Christmas Eve, black accessories are an easy choice with this shade of red. The small structured handbag looks lovely, and I’d choose black pumps if you’re going to a restaurant.

Red Tweed Jacket Dress

This is a good outfit to study if you like the look of a jacket dress but can’t find one you love.

The black trim and gold buttons are what give the red tweed its polished appearance. You can recreate a similar idea with a red bouclé jacket and a black skirt, or even a plain black dress underneath.

When you’re shopping for tweed, look at the fabric closely. Some versions feel soft and comfortable, while others are quite stiff or scratchy. Since a jacket dress sits directly against your skin, the lining matters.

I would also check the buttons before wearing it to dinner. Decorative buttons sometimes look secure but don’t keep the front of the dress closed as well as you’d expect. A hidden snap can help when needed.

Black Sequin Corset With Wide-Leg Trousers

Black wide-leg trousers are easy to wear to a Christmas Eve restaurant dinner, especially if you have a dressy top to go with them. The corset in this outfit has enough sparkle to make the trousers feel like eveningwear.

You could use an embellished camisole or a structured satin top for a similar look. I’d choose one that you can wear comfortably on its own, since you’ll probably take your jacket off at dinner.

And keep this idea in mind for other special occasions. A good pair of black trousers can work with several different evening tops without looking like the same outfit every time.

Red Sweater With a Matching Sequin Skirt

I wouldn’t worry about matching every red piece perfectly in this outfit. The sweater, skirt, tights, and shoes can be slightly different shades. In fact, the combination often looks more interesting when the reds aren’t identical.

Try holding the pieces together in daylight before wearing them. Some reds lean orange, others look pink or burgundy, and you’ll quickly see which shades work nicely together.

One detail I’d keep from the photo is the simple sweater. A regular crewneck is enough here because the skirt has so much shine. You don’t need to shop for a special holiday top to wear with it.

Cream Maxi Dress With a Burgundy Faux-Fur Jacket

Cream and burgundy are beautiful together, especially when you’re tired of wearing black to every winter dinner.

The cream dress in this photo has a high neckline and a subtle textured pattern. Burgundy shoes pick up the color of the faux-fur jacket, so the outfit still feels connected when you look at it from head to toe.

A long cream dress can also work with a burgundy wool coat, which might be more useful if you want something you can wear regularly.

Red Fit-and-Flare Mini Dress

The full skirt makes this red dress especially pretty for Christmas Eve, and the white heels and pearl-trimmed bag give it a softer look than black accessories would.

If you’re looking for a similar dress, pay attention to how the skirt is made. Some fit-and-flare dresses have a lining or extra layers that keep the skirt full, while others fall much closer to the legs. That can make two dresses with the same shape look completely different.

For a family dinner, I’d choose a version with enough movement that you can walk and move around comfortably without spending the evening fixing the skirt.

Burgundy Feather-Trimmed Outfit

If you like feather-trimmed clothes, I’d look for pieces where the feathers sit around the cuffs or hems, as they do here. You get the pretty movement without covering the whole outfit in feathers.

The trousers are particularly interesting with those slim metallic heels because the feather trim remains visible around the ankles.

For Christmas Eve dinner, keep an eye on the sleeves when you’re eating or serving food. If you find a similar top with removable feather cuffs, that’s even better. You can wear it to dinner and remove the trim whenever you need to.

Elegant Christmas Eve Dinner Outfits

For a formal Christmas Eve dinner, the invitation or restaurant dress code should help you decide how far to dress up. Some celebrations call for a long evening dress, while a short cocktail dress works perfectly well for others. Once you’ve chosen the dress, check the details that matter when you’ll be wearing it for several hours, especially the fabric, neckline, and shoes.

Black Maxi Dress With Pearl Details

The pearl detail around the neckline changes this entire black dress. It’s almost like a necklace built into the fabric.

You can use the same idea with a simple black dress and a detachable pearl collar. Just check that the collar lies neatly against the neckline and doesn’t shift as you move.

This is a particularly useful styling trick if you already have a black dress you love and want to wear it to another special dinner. An embellished collar can make it feel like a different dress without altering it permanently.

Silver Embellished Maxi Dress

A heavily beaded dress needs a little more attention before you wear it for a full evening.

First, check the inside of the sleeves. Embellishments around the arms can feel uncomfortable when you bend your elbows or rest your arms on the table. A smooth lining makes a big difference.

The matching embellished clutch works nicely here, but you could use a plain silver evening bag too. Just avoid bags with rough chains or exposed hardware that might catch on the beads.

This is a lovely choice for a formal Christmas Eve dinner with an eveningwear dress code.

Long-Sleeve Black Sequin Mini Dress

With a short black sequin dress like this, the tights can change how the outfit looks. Sheer black tights work well with the ankle boots in the photo, while an opaque pair gives you more coverage for a colder evening. I’ve used similar ideas with tights, boots, and dresses in my winter party outfits article, where you’ll find more options for dressing up when it’s cold outside.

I’d pay attention to the inside of the dress too. Sequins around the sleeve openings and hem can scratch your skin or snag delicate tights. Look for a smooth lining and check the edges before wearing it.

Cream Sequin Mini Dress With a Black Bow

Before choosing this dress, look at the back. That’s where the detail is, and it changes how you should style your hair.

A low bun or ponytail will show the large black bow much better than wearing your hair down.

The black bow and black tights work well together, so you could finish the outfit with black heels without introducing another color.

And if you have a plain cream dress, a black ribbon tied into your hair could give you a similar Christmas look without needing a dress with a built-in bow.

Black Sequin Mini Dress With a White Back Bow

The oversized white bow is beautiful, but I’d check its placement before buying a dress like this for a seated dinner.

A large bow across the upper back may get flattened when you lean against a chair. If it’s removable, that gives you more flexibility. Otherwise, choose one made from softer fabric that can recover its shape.

Black Off-Shoulder Bubble Mini Dress

Bubble skirts have a rounded shape because the fabric folds back underneath the hem. That makes the fabric important.

A crisp material will hold the bubble shape, while a softer fabric creates a more relaxed version. If you’re shopping for a bubble dress, look at photos of it from the side as well as the front. That’s where you can really see how much volume it has.

The off-shoulder neckline is another thing I’d test before deciding on the dress. Raise your arms, reach forward, and move around a little. Some off-shoulder styles stay in place beautifully, while others need constant adjusting.

Black Sequin Mini Dress With Gold Bow Heels

Try changing your shoes before buying another black party dress for Christmas. The gold bow heels in this outfit give the dress a completely different look from ordinary black pumps.

And you can get a similar effect with metallic heels you already own. Even a small gold detail on the shoes can look lovely with black sequins. I’d try the combination on before buying matching accessories, because you might find that the shoes are enough.

How to Dress for Christmas Eve Dinner Without Buying a New Outfit

You might already have a Christmas Eve dinner outfit in your closet without realizing it. Think about that dress you wore to a birthday dinner or the skirt you bought for Christmas last year. There’s no reason you can’t wear them again, and you don’t have to style them exactly the same way.

Before shopping, try your occasion clothes with pieces you normally wear during the week. A satin skirt might work with a sweater you already own, and a sleeveless dress can look lovely with winter boots and a cardigan. You can use the same idea throughout the holidays, which is something I’ve covered in more detail in my Christmas capsule wardrobe outfit ideas article.

I’d also try changing the shoes before giving up on an outfit. The same black dress can look quite different with knee-high boots, metallic heels, or simple flats.

Once you’ve found something you like, try the complete outfit on before Christmas Eve. It’s much easier to make small changes when you’re not rushing to get ready for dinner.
